Deer Hunting 101, August 8-9, Covington

More Details – Whether you are brand new to deer hunting or looking to sharpen your skills before the season begins, this comprehensive course provides practical, hands-on instruction covering every stage of a successful and ethical hunt in Georgia.

Artemis members will learn the essential regulations and opportunities available to hunters across the state, including permits, hunting seasons, special opportunities for women hunters, and the many types of public and private lands available for hunting in Georgia such as Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), Voluntary Public Access (VPA) properties, Army Corps of Engineers lands, national forests, leased lands, and private property access.

The course also includes detailed instruction on firearms and archery equipment, including selecting the proper firearm and caliber for different game, compound bows versus crossbows, bow sighting and setup, broadhead selection, equipment maintenance, and critical safety practices for both firearm and archery hunters.

Students will gain valuable field knowledge on hunting setups and strategy, including blind selection and placement, tree stands and saddle hunting systems, shot-angle adjustments from elevated positions, scent and wind management, and how to identify productive hunting locations through effective scouting techniques and understanding deer movement patterns in Georgia.

Additional instruction focuses on ethical shot placement with firearms and archery equipment, range finder use, blood trailing and tracking wounded game, and practical methods for recovering and transporting deer from the field.

Tentatively, the course concludes with an introduction to deer processing, providing participants with a better understanding of field dressing and meat processing practices from harvest to table.

  • Trevor: Hunting setups and strategy, including blind selection and placement, firearm shot-angle adjustments from elevated positions, ethical shot placement with firearms, scent and wind management, and how to identify productive hunting locations through effective scouting techniques and understanding deer movement patterns in Georgia.
  • Alisha and Gretchen: Tree stands and saddle hunting systems, archery shot-angle adjustments from elevated positions, ethical shot placement with archery equipment, and range finder use.
  • Trevor: Blood trailing and tracking wounded game, and practical methods for recovering and transporting deer from the field.
  • Trevor and Ryan: Introduction to deer processing, providing participants with a better understanding of field dressing and meat processing practices from harvest to table. This part is dependent on the USDA supplying deer for the course. If time allows, an introduction to venison cooking and recipes.
