Artemis Georgia- Virtual Fireside Chat
Ruffed Grouse
April 10th- 7pm
Emily Rushton, Ruffed Grouse Biologist for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division, will join the ladies of Artemis GA for an informal discussion about Ruffed Grouse, their habitat, where they can be found in Georgia, what the heck drumming is and why UGA cares about “drumming logs”. Follow up the chat by participating in a biologist-led Ruffed Grouse survey April 25th-26th (more details below). REGISTER HERE FOR THE CHAT.

Artemis Georgia- Shotgun Instruction & Fitting
Rome, GA

Join us at Floyd County Wildlife Club for a Shotgun Fitting and Basics Class led by certified instructor Jim Jordan. This is an opportunity to try out 12- and 20- gauge shotguns and evaluate the length of pull and correct drop at face, drop at comb, cast, pitch at butt stock, and other factors in order to find the best shotgun fit for you.  And we’ll learn the basics of how to evaluate a proper shotgun fitting from a gun store. (Many shooting instructors now charge a fee if a client wishes to know measurements for a gun fit. This is a great class that includes consulting for a new or used shotgun purchase.)  Cost is $50 and limited to 6 participants. Clay shooting only option is available for experienced shooters with their own equipment for $20. CLOSED

Ruffed Grouse Survey & Camp
Blairsville, GA
April 25th – 26th
Join Artemis GA Officer, Olivia Menard and biologist Emily Rushton and Clay Delancey for an overnight immersion into the world of Ruffed Grouse. We’ll have an informal meet & greet Thursday evening. The surveys will begin before sunrise the next morning (Friday, April 26th), when the Ruffed Grouse are most actively drumming. This is a unique opportunity to walk some of Georgia’s more remote forests with biologists and researchers. Participants will not just be hiking. This event is part of the study. Participants will be assisting the researchers and providing valuable input that will contribute to this important study about Ruffed Grouse abundance and genetic connectivity across the North Georgia mountains, the southern periphery of ruffed grouse range. Maximum of 12 participants. Additional info sessions will be held on April 18. Applicants will be notified by April 12. REGISTER HERE.

Artemis Georgia – Fall Fish Camp

Frank Gross Recreation Area, Suches, GA
Fish, Hike, Camp, Repeat! The ladies of Artemis GA will setup base camp at the Frank Gross Recreation Area. DAY 1: We’ll kick off the event with a special treat and talk fishing, fish habitat, and all things fish with Kelly Taylor, Project Leader and Hatchery Manager for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Kelly will give us a personal tour of the Chattahoochee Forest National Fish Hatchery he manages in Suches. Then, we’ll take the information we learned at the hatchery to some nearby streams where the true anglers among our group will have the chance to reel in our supper!  DAY 2: We’ll hike a portion of the historic Benton Mackeye Trail overflowing with scenic and wildlife views. Our destination for the day will be the picturesque and serene Toccoa River Swinging Bridge. Dates, details, and registration will be posted when available.
