The Georgia Wildlife Federation, a 501c3 non-profit organization promoting the wise use of Georgia’s natural resources, is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of a Private Lands Biologist. The candidate selected for this position will be responsible for implementing a new longleaf pine ecosystem restoration project in the historic range of the longleaf pine in Georgia. Focus project counties include: Appling, Burke, Harris, Richmond, Jefferson, Glascock, Hancock, Washington, Baldwin, Wilkinson, Twiggs, Bibb, Houston, Peach, Crawford. This project is funded through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Longleaf Stewardship Fund, which includes support from Southern Company. Program delivery is accomplished through a partnership between the Georgia Wildlife Federation and the National Wildlife Federation.
Specific duties include:
- Provide on-the-ground longleaf pine ecosystem establishment, restoration, and management technical assistance to private, non-industrial forest landowners.
- Provide general forestry and wildlife technical assistance and write management plans for private landowners.
- Develop, coordinate, and deliver presentations/education programs to landowners/resource professionals.
- Prepare project-related and general wildlife management articles for Georgia Wildlife Federation’s and National Wildlife Federation’s newsletters and website.
- Maintain project records and report associated information and accomplishments to supervisor and partners as needed and for periodic reports.
- Work cooperatively with other conservation organizations and agencies that are working toward longleaf conservation.
Qualifications include:
B.S. degree (minimum) in wildlife management, wildlife ecology, or related field. Joint degree(s) in wildlife/forestry preferred.
- Experience or knowledge in sustainable forestry, longleaf ecosystem restoration and prescribed fire.
- Experience working with private landowners.
- Ability to communicate complex biological concepts to landowners and the public.
- Knowledge of Farm Bill programs (e.g. EQIP, CRP).
- Ability and willingness to work in a partnership.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Dependable transportation for conduct of business (mileage reimbursement provided).
- Ability to travel frequently within the state and region.
Compensation / Employment Provisions:
Position Type: Full-time through July 31, 2020. Employment beyond the project period is contingent on continuation of funding.
Salary Range: $38,000-42,000 (commensurate with qualifications and experience).
