Is your family interested in camping, but not quite comfortable enough to go it alone? Then Georgia’s Camp Charlie is for you.
Camp Charlie is a planned weekend of camping and hands-on outdoor activities. The program primarily targets families who would like to experience the outdoors with their children but may lack the knowledge, skill, equipment, and self-confidence to venture very far into the “wilds”. Thanks to support from several sponsors, we will be headed to the Okefenokee in November. Volunteers, mentors, and first-time campers from the Folkston area will join together to experience the wonders of the swamp. It’s a time to relax, enjoy friends and family, and get comfortable spending time in the outdoors.
Each family will have a mentor to make sure everyone feels welcome and has a great experience.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any family in the Folkston area interested in learning more about camping and enjoying a weekend in the outdoors.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
NOTHING. You just need to get you and your family to and from the campsite. Food, camping equipment, transportation and activities will be provided once at the campsite.
WHAT TO BRING?
Sleeping bag or sheets/blanket and any other personal items.

Camp Charlie needs mentors and volunteers to make the weekend successful. Mentors are hand-picked volunteers who love the outdoors, want to share their knowledge and experiences, truly enjoy people, and are willing to invest in their Camp Charlie family over the course of the weekend. Often, they form bonds with their families that are long-lasting and help make Camp Charlie an experience which lasts in the hearts of participants. They help teach their families basic camping skills such as setting up a tent and building a fire, and assist with outdoor activities like fishing and canoeing. Volunteers serve the entire camp and help make the weekend run smoothly and efficiently. Tasks can include setting up meeting areas, preparing meals, assisting with outdoor activities, and registering participants.
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
FRIDAY
Arrive at the campground in Folkston between 4-6 pm. Set up camp with mentors and enjoy fun activities, cookout, and campfire.
SATURDAY
Travel to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to enjoy guided tours of the swamp and historic sites, followed by evening activities at the campsite.
SUNDAY
Breakfast and breakdown camp. Depart mid-morning to noon.
